Prof Colin Smith

Professor of Neuropathology
Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences, University of Edinburgh

Professor Colin Smith runs the MRC Edinburgh Brain Bank part of the UK Brain Bank Network. This facility receives donations from people who have generously agreed to donate brain and spinal cord tissue after death. The tissue is stored and then provided to local, national and international researchers. For more information, see the Edinburgh Brain and Tissue Bank website.

The Edinburgh Brain Bank is the Scottish centre for donations through the MND network, and the tissue has been used by many different research groups. Prof Smith's lab has published research findings using donated tissues, and has ongoing programmes studying what happens in cells undergoing neurodegeneration in MND.

Colin undertook his clinical training in Glasgow, receiving FRCPath in Neuropathology in 2000. He then moved to Edinburgh taking up a Senior Lecturer post in 2001.
