Rhythmic movements, like walking, running and swimming, are generated by groups of spinal neurons. Dr HongYan Zhang’s research focuses on understanding spinal neurons that control swimming activity of simple aquatic animals. Using electrophysiological techniques combining with imaging and behaviour studies, her research investigates how locomotor circuits produce rhythmic activity in health and in diseases, how motor circuits develop to suit changing requirements and how these neurons recover following spinal cord injury to restore movements.

HongYan studied animal physiology at Radboud University Nijmegen (The Netherlands), and then worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of St Andrews before she joined the University of Edinburgh as a Chancellor’s Fellow.
