Dr Guy Bewick
Dr Guy Bewick’s work seeks to understand how nerve and muscle cells communicate with each other to ensure exactly the right type and amount of function. This knowledge is then used to understand how to treat neuromuscular diseases, such as MND. His work is basic research but allows us to understand better what can go wrong in disease. Guy uses stem cells from people with MND to test how well they can form and maintain good quality nerve-muscle connections. Using this and other test systems, he then assesses whether drugs or natural signalling molecules produced by the body can slow or block the progressive deterioration in nerve-muscle connections caused by disease.
Guy studied Zoology at the University of East Anglia, before undertaking a PhD in nerve regeneration at King’s College London. After several research positions around the UK and in the USA specialising in nerve-muscle communication, he joined the University of Aberdeen in 1994.
