Euan MacDonald Centre-funded PhD student
Institute for Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Research, University of Edinburgh

Irene is pursuing a Euan MacDonald Centre funded PhD at the Institute of Neurosciences and Cardiovascular Research, University of Edinburgh. Her PhD is guided by an interdisciplinary panel of supervisors comprising Dr Bhuvaneish Selvaraj, Prof Siddharthan Chandran, Prof Neil Carragher, and Dr Rebecca Graham. Irene's research focuses on testing a wide array of drugs on cell models of motor neuron disease (MND) and using bioinformatics to identify promising drugs and combinations. This large-scale approach aims to accelerate drug discovery and, ultimately, lead to better treatments for MND in a shorter time frame.

Prior to PhD studies, Irene obtained her undergraduate degree in Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh. During these studies, Irene worked for a year at Illumina, Cambridge, where she optimized high-throughput sequencing robotic protocols, facilitating clinical genetic testing across the globe.
