May 2026: Remembering our dear friend with gratitude for his longstanding friendship, generosity and unwavering support of the Euan MacDonald Centre.

Colleagues at the Euan MacDonald Centre and the University of Edinburgh are deeply saddened to hear of the death of our friend and supporter, Scott Hastings. Scott had been a tireless and vocal supporter of MND Research at the University since the Euan MacDonald Centre for Motor Neuron Disease Research was established in 2007.

Scott was the chief architect of an annual, much-loved, fundraising event, “Just a Sports Quiz” which brought the communities of research and rugby together in a celebration of sport to raise vital funding for new MND treatments. This annual event raised tens of thousands of pounds for MND, a disease which had affected his close friends and family. At Scott’s request, the quiz was accessible, friendly and fun and exemplified the brio and good humour that he brought to so many of the causes he supported.

He held an honorary doctorate from Edinburgh and was very much part of the University of Edinburgh’s wider family. His courage, warmth and concern for others will be sorely missed.

Colleagues and friends would like to pass their sincere condolences to his family at this sad time.
