Why did you decide to fundraise?

Graeme Barry’s decision to fundraise stems from both a deeply personal loss and a professional commitment to neurological research. Having witnessed the devastating impact of MND first-hand through the loss of his uncle, Graeme was determined to take action. His uncle's passing fuelled a drive to support research efforts that could one day lead to a cure. Working as a senior research technician at the Edinburgh Brain Bank, Graeme sees the daily importance of neurological research, especially in combating diseases like MND. As someone who handles brain tissue samples and understands the critical need for research, he felt compelled to channel his passion for running into raising funds that would support the Euan MacDonald Centre's pioneering MND research.

How did you raise the money?

Graeme’s approach to fundraising involved both personal dedication and leveraging his network for support. Having already participated in three half marathons, Graeme knew what it would take to train for a successful race, but this time the stakes were higher. He trained by running during his lunch breaks at the University of Edinburgh and playing football to stay fit. His goal was to complete the Edinburgh Half Marathon in under two hours and, more importantly, raise as much money as possible for the cause. Graeme started with a modest fundraising target, but the response exceeded his expectations. With the help of social media and the unwavering support of family, friends, and colleagues, he was able to nearly double his initial goal. His story and dedication have inspired many to contribute to the cause, demonstrating the power of community and online support in driving a successful fundraising effort. Fundraising wisdom:

Graeme’s fundraising journey offers valuable insights for others looking to make a difference. First and foremost, he emphasises the importance of personal connection to the cause. His motivation to fundraise comes from a place of personal loss and professional dedication, which has resonated deeply with others. "If my run can help fund research that gives even one person hope, then it’s worth it,” Graeme says. The key to successful fundraising, he believes, is setting a clear and compelling goal, being persistent, and reaching out to your community for support. He also learned that flexibility is important, as his modest fundraising target was surpassed thanks to the generosity of supporters. Graeme’s advice to others is simple: "Every donation, no matter how small, helps fund critical research and brings us one step closer to a cure."
